Hi, Friends,

I'd like to cross post here something I've posted on my other blog, Ginikanan.com. (Please check it out when you can.)

Dear Charlie and Jack,
Today, I set up an altar in front of the biggest tree in the park grove
behind our house. I sat in silence as I thought of the more than 2 year journey
that led up to the eventual publication of the book, Mama, Mama. I
gave thanks to the spirit that lives in the trees, birds, animals, and
everything else around me. It is the same spirit that lives in me,
allowing for the creation of this book; the same spirit that lives in my
family, friends, and community allowing them to support me in this project. I
also asked for blessings as I face the task of spreading the words that I’ve
made tangible.

I would have stayed longer but a few kids arrived in the sandbox near the
grove and their happy giggles made it hard for me to think. I was also a bit
worried of my use of candles in the middle of the pretty dry grove. So I left
and came back to make myself lunch and write this.

I think now about the altar I just created. I have never done anything like
it before. My child self, the one who was unconscious and deeply colonized by
western mentality, would have laughed at what I was doing, would have dismissed
the act as “backward”, a meaningless “tinuohan sa buktot” (ways of the
hunchback).

Years ago, my mother, your Lola, spearheaded the construction of our home
along Sayre Highway in
Malaybalay, Bukidnon. I don’t know how long the construction took but when the
house was finally finished, your Lola asked a Datu we knew, the one we kids
called Datu Pobre (Chief (which can also mean Rich) Poor), to perform a ritual
to give thanks to the spirits and to ask their permission and blessings to live
in the house.

This is how I remember that event: Datu Pobre, in his faded Binukid garb and
headdress, mumbled and blew and spat a lot while he prayed in front of an altar
that he had created. Then he gutted a chicken and spread droplets of blood
along the entry way and on the altar offerings, including on the mannga,
santol, grains of rice, and the smiling Buddha statue that your Lola inherited
from her Chinese father. Datu Pobre also buried a few peso coins below the
door. After Datu Pobre performed his offerings, the chicken was cooked and we
all had chicken soup. Later that day, your Lola took all of us to church to
pray for Jesus’ blessings and be blessed with holy water straight from the
priest’s hand.

As I unpack this memory, I realize these:

I didn’t know what that ritual was called. I never bothered to know because
I thought that kind of ritual was kinaraan and had no place in my life. But now
I’m making the effort to know. Pamuhat is the general term for Bukidnon rituals
propitiating the many guardian spirits and the deities. There are various
rituals for various reasons: to give thanks, to ask for permission to
enter a space, to heal the sick, to seek blessings in an endeavor… Yes, I had
to read and google-research to name acts that were once mundane and familiar to
me. It is sad that it’s taken me this long to (re)familiarize myself with them
and understand their significance! No time for regrets and head bashing over
how things were, however. I mourn my years of unconsciousness… and now I inch
forward, ready to learn more about my roots, my ginikanan.

It is very likely that the Datu’s name wasn’t really Datu Pobre, that kids
like me called him that behind his back to make fun of what we perceived as his
laughable poverty. He was always trading his kamote and gabi root crops for my
Lolo’s Tanduay rum. It never occurred to me that his trading, even though it
didn’t involve the almighty paper money, was another legitimate way of
acquiring necessary goods. And a good one, at that! If I could meet with that
Datu again, I would apologize, ask his name and call him that. And I pledge to
accord others with the dignity they deserve by acknowledging and
accepting who and as they are.

It is also very likely that what we kids thought were the Datu’s mumblings
were actual Binukid chant that we just didn’t understand. Because we were
taught from a very early age that speaking English equated with intelligence
and superiority, we looked down on the indigenous languages and their speakers
and, instead, boasted of our mastery of English. Ironically, now I feel robbed
of my precious right to (learn to) speak in my ancestor’s language. Again, I
mourn my loss… and move forward with the pledge to encourage others to preserve
their own mother tongue, whatever it may be, by speaking it with pride in their
daily lives and, if possible, passing it on to their children.

I’m also remembering now that because our new house was along the town’s
only highway, passersby looked in and those who had nowhere else to be at the
very moment stayed to witness. The ritual, therefore, gathered not only our
family and friends, but also members of the community, some of whom were
strangers to us. It didn’t matter. At the end of the ritual, we all shared the
chicken soup together. I assume everybody left sated, happy, and ready to
tackle the rest of the day. Out of everything, this realization that rituals
involve not just the individual but also a whole bunch of others, is what draws
me. We all strive for connection and rituals allow us that. I hope to connect
more with the community.

Lastly, the Datu was cool with having the smiling Buddha attend the party.
It seems the spirits and deities (even Magbabaya, the supreme deity) can kick
it with Jesus and Buddha! There is enough chicken soup for every one willing to
share space, regardless of our leanings.

We are so so so pleased to let you all know that finally,
after much back and forth with the printer, we have hit the "right" degree
of brightness (I'm not sure what the accurate term is for that). It took three
sets of proofs, some heated exchanges, and lots of patience on both sides. It
also took an extra couple of months. Several times I thought about just
approving the proofs even though I wasn't completely happy with them. When
friends asked me how my book was doing, I felt the pressure to just be done! However,
I think it was worth going through all of this. There were many good lessons to
learn, for sure, and I'm glad I stuck with it.

So, we're down to the nitty gritty. The pages are looking good...but the color is not right just yet. We need the book to be brighter and more vivacious. We're going back and forth with the printer on how bright the pages need to look. But we're hopeful we'll figure this out soon so we can have a publication date set as soon as possible.

In the meantime, we're sending our Kickstarter rewards. If you pledged via Kickstarter, look for either a coloring page or book or both in your e-mail. Please feel free to share them!

Lastly, we've been invited to share our publishing experience at the Napa Asian Pacific Heritage Month celebration on May 14, 2016. If you're in the area, please swing by and show us some love. There will be food and presentations.

Over the weekend, we received the wet proofs from the printer. We are excited to be one step closer towards our goal!

(Charlie and Jack check out the wet proofs)

And now the hard work of marketing and selling a thousand copies of the book becomes even more real and pressing. We're reaching out to local bookstores, preschools, Filipino-American organizations, and other groups. If you know of a group or individual who might be interested in purchasing this book and adding it to their library, please let us know. Also, if you know of a venue (a cafe, a preschool, etc.) who might be interested in hosting us for a reading, please let us know. The book is slated to come out in 3-4 months, hopefully in time for Mother's Day. We really need your help in getting this book out.

Thanks, everybody! We will keep you posted.

How did three months fly by just like that???

First of all, Happy Holidays from all of us here at Mama, Mama! It's the season for scarves and (extra) good cheer. Stay warm and enjoy your time with friends and family.

After so much back and forth with Andrew, mainly over the page count and the title page, the file was finally sent off to the printer. Which means things are set. I'm very relieved... but also freaked out!!! What if there's a typo, or two, that we somehow missed? What if, what if... Ugh!

Not much to report, really, except to say that the last few months we spent wrangling over the details have been trying. We were so wrong to think, back in September, that we were "almost" done. Ha! Little did I know that it would take a couple more months to clean up the files and get them ready for the printer. Just understanding the page count concept alone took me forever. Also, it seemed there was always one more typo to be found after every "final" draft that we did. We had many "final" files.

And on this note, we want to say thanks to Tom McCarthy, Mike's law journal advisor at Hastings and my colleague from my Jossey Bass days, for doing one "final" proof editing round to "keep us out of trouble".

While we wait for word from the printer, we're going to start looking into the Kickstarter prizes. We know it's a bit late- thanks for the patience!

Thanks for checking in! Librohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12620907730930711615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7509979775159976080.post-39501608779826208632015-09-22T13:24:00.001-07:002015-09-22T13:24:18.905-07:00Finalizing Illustrations Hello, World!

The proverbial light at the end of the tunnel is shining bright! We have finally finished all the illustrations and now we move on to editing the pages for all those pesky typos and questionable font choices.

Yes, it's exciting. And also frightening. The doubts are starting to come in. Is this book good enough? Would people like it? Etc. Etc. I have to stop this train of thought and instead focus on getting the work done and the book out into the world!

Here's a few sample pages I printed out. I tried to print the color version at Kinko's but they were going to charge me almost $30.00 for 1 copy so I said no. Below you can see one page in color so you can get an idea of the color scheme.

We finally launched our Kickstarter campaign yesterday. Yey!!!

To those of you who may not be familiar with Kickstarter, we need to raise at least $5,000 otherwise we get nothing. It's exciting and daunting all at once. So please pledge if you can.

The link is below.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1247154770/mama-mama-know-what-i-like

Click on it and it will take you to the front page.

It will look like this:

There's a video. Right next to the video is a tracker for the pledge. Press on the "Back This Project" green button. It will take you to a page where you'd need to input your pledge amount and it will also ask for your name and email address and password.

Please don't let this process stop you from proceeding. Kickstarter only needs to create an account because that is how I track my backers and how I get in touch with them for rewards or updates in the future. After this page, it will take you the credit card page and once you submit your pledge, you're done! I promise you it's not hard. But if you run into any trouble, please let me know.

There's a bunch of awesome rewards waiting for you- so come and pledge and let's make this book happen!!!!

Please also help by spreading the word about this project and link to the Kickstarter campaign.

Thank you very much!
We hope you had an enjoyable time with family and friends over the holidays.

We're seeing the so called light at the end of the tunnel as Andrew nears completion of the illustrations!

Last month, friends Annie Frey and Jade Shulist who own a kid-friendly cafe in Berkeley called The Rec Room, invited me to read during their site launch. It was a chance to connect with people beyond my circle of friends and family. The response was positive: the kids stayed for the entire reading and several adults came up to show support by signing up for the e-mail status updates. Definitely going back there for another reading once the book comes out!

Another childhood friend, Raziel Valiente, also started introducing the book to her organization, Bukidnon Association of Southern California, during their Christmas party. This means a lot to me because the organization's members are from Bukidnon and speak Bisaya. I'm hoping they will support the book as it represents them and their culture in a way that most US mainstream children's books don't.

Should you want to join us in spreading the word out by reaching out to your network of friends and family, we would be immensely grateful. We can provide you with flyers or any other marketing materials you might need. Please contact me if you are interested. Libropst@gmail.com.

Thanks to Emi Endo for putting together the flyers! And for adding a banner on this blog site. Did you notice it? Check it out- now the site looks legit!

We're moving along, still targeting a February kicstarter campaign. Lots of work to do before then.

Thanks for checking in. We wish you loads of laughter and happiness for this new year!

Happy December! Hope Thanksgiving was a memorable one.

I just looked at the oldest post and...I can't believe it's been a year since we officially started this blog and project!!!

Alright, moving on.

For those of you who are eager to support us NOW with your donations (instead of waiting for the Kickstarter campaign, see below), we are grateful, and ready to accept any amount! Please click on the "Support Us" tab above and it will take you to the page that has the info on how to donate as well as the PayPal option.

Alright, the Kickstarter campaign. We worked hard but, unfortunately, didn't quite make the deadline that we've set for ourselves, i.e. mid November. We had the option of pushing for a late November/early December launch but we thought better of it. December is a very busy time of the year for most people and we didn't want to add to the busy-ness and get lost in the shuffle. So we've decided to keep on working on the illustrations and marketing campaign but we will wait until February 2015 to launch our Kickstarter. We hope by then most everyone would have recovered from the holidays and easier to reach out to.

But in the meantime, here are a couple of updates:

Our friend, Emi Endo, has offered to make fliers and other marketing materials! She is a graphic designer and a writer. Can't say it enough- I'm very grateful for this. As soon as we get a sample flyer, we will post it up.

Also, this December 14, our friends Jade Shulist and Annie Frey, have invited me to present the book at their soon-to-be-open kid friendly cafe in Berkeley called The Rec Room. I don't yet know what I'll do but I'm so excited!

Thanks, Emi, Jade, and Annie! And thank you for checking in and for your support!
We're working on our Kickstarter video which we hope to launch by mid November! Our resident videographer, Von Hernandez, is hard at work and we can't thank him enough.

Last week, we went to the Blake Garden up in the El Cerrito Hills to shoot the video. It rained in the morning but by 3:30 the sky cleared up and we managed to get the San Francisco scene (Alcatraz Island, Bay Bridge, skyline, the bay, etc.) in the background. Blake Garden is where the kids and I used to go for our picnics and is the inspiration for the picnic scenes in the book. It is always peaceful and calm up there! (We moved to Davis in July of this year and Blake Garden is one of the things I miss about El Cerrito.)

I've finalized the script for the audio and gotten permission to use music composed by a good friend of mine, Frances Ancheta. Yey!

I feel so self-conscious, though. I've been in several dance and theatrical performances before but being in front of the camera freaks me out! Looking at myself in the video with an objective eye will be a challenge...

(This is me before facing the camera.)

Additionally, we are adding both Bisaya and Tagalog translations. Another good friend of mine, Chris Bustos, asked me why there were not going to be translations on the actual pages. Originally, we planned to provide translation only on one of the back pages. After Chris' question, I rethought the plan and decided that the book would benefit from Bisaya translations right on the pages in addition to Tagalog translations on the back pages. This changes our lay-out a bit but it's something we could work with. I've got Tagalog speaking friends, Ricarte Abejuela and Andreas Santos, helping me out with the translations. I didn't think I'd need help with Bisaya since I speak it but I'm reaching out to my Bisaya friends for some insight. Can't hurt!

Thank you, Von and Frances and Chris and Ricarte and Andreas! And thank you everybody for keeping in touch and supporting this project! Happy Halloween! Librohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12620907730930711615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7509979775159976080.post-45336952252659145022014-09-30T14:26:00.002-07:002014-10-01T12:52:34.568-07:00Inking and ColoringHi All,

Where did the months go? And how quickly! The kids and I left for the Philippines back in May and that somehow stalled the project. We also moved to Davis (California) in July and life has been pretty busy since then.

But onward we go.

I had to struggle a bit more with the manuscript. I was seized with the sudden desire to keep the manuscript (really) short and tight. I went slashing here and there and must have reduced the word count by half. Andrew was dismayed when he got the FINAL manuscript. He said I took out all the fun from the book. He asked me to think about the drastic changes before he proceeded with his illustrations. He was nice about it, though. I valued his opinion so I once again did some soul searching: who is this book for? why am I writing it? etc. etc. It took me a while but eventually I did finalize the manuscript. There's no going back now.

Since then, Andrew has been working on the colors. I got to see all the mini pages loosely colored. It felt so weird (yes, that's the best I can describe the experience!) to see the book coming together even more. I know I said this before when I saw the line drawings arranged together in a book form. I guess each phase just brings us closer to the final book and I am feeling very excited to be seeing the end of each phase.

And so we are off to inking and then coloring. Below is a preview or sample page. This is probably about 90% done.

I've also been doing my research on printing options and costs. When I first started looking into various printers, I was overwhelmed by the options. Fortunately, Janet Del Mundo, the same person who generously shared with me with her expertise on everything related to children's book publishing, gave me some leads on printers. I'm pretty confident that the printer I'm going to be using will churn out quality books as they print for big publishers like the (ex) Children's Book Press.

Also, yes, we are getting ready to raise funds. I spoke too soon in my last post back in April. We are now targeting a publication date sometime in early 2015. This time frame gives us about 3 months, until December this year, to finish the illustration and fundraise. We hope to print and publish sometime in the first three months of 2015. So please please consider contributing! More on fundraising soon.

Thanks for the continued support. Please check again for updates.

As we move on to the color phase, the big question that crops up is, "how brown is brown?" Prior to today, I thought I knew what brown meant to me. Apparently not, judging from the difficulty I'm having in choosing the "right" brown. There's always more to the process. Other than choosing the brown, we also have to choose which two tones to use, which finish, whether to go with or without outlines. These are things that I don't tend to think of on their own. All I seem to know (and go by) is how I feel when I look at the illustration, whether it's offputting or inviting or however way I'm feeling. When I have to articulate why, I have trouble expressing the reasons. Again, lots to learn!

Brown Enough? Too Brown? Not the Right Brown?

While Andrew is finalizing the pages, I'm putting together the fundraising materials. We are targeting to get the illustrations done in the next 2-3 months and hopefully we can raise the money by August (GOSH! That's only four months to raise at least $10,000.00 to fund a 1,000 print run!) If we do this, we can aim to get the book published by and shipped back to us by November, just in time for marketing it for the holidays. One can hope, right?

Chugging along... We can do this...

Thank you for the support! Seriously. It means a great deal. Especially now when I get overwhelmed each time I start thinking of raising some serious cash for the printing. I hope yours is off to a good start.

Our 2014 is definitely off to a good start. Andrew and I finished the quarter page part of the layout phase. I know we still have a long way and a lot more work ahead of us but it's very exciting to see the book start to take on a new life beyond the text! Andrew sketched seven versions of the text and I got to pick and choose which versions I wanted.

The craft of illustrating is so foreign to me. Fortunately, Andrew brings with him so much of talent and expertise to this process. I'm very thankful to be able to work with and learn from him.

Here's a quick shot of the quarter page layouts.
We're moving on to the half page layouts after this. We're getting there!

Today, I'm glad to report, I finalized the manuscript. It took me a while to reach this point-- there was always something that needed a little bit more fine-tuning or tweaking. But today, I feel it and I will proclaim it: the manuscript is final. A few trusted friends had already given me very helpful feedback. Dana Goldberg (of http://whirligigeditorial.com/) also read the manuscript and gave me her critique. Each one of them gave me a new perspective and made me think about the book in different ways. I am very grateful for all of their support.

I hope you had a joyful Thanksgiving celebration with your family and loved ones! Here comes December... and we are moving forward...

Stay tuned!

I'm very excited to share the final face sketch of the boy protagonist, Charlie!

Here it is!
The illustrator, Andrew Rodgers, is hard at work! He has just finished the sketching phase and we've got the final sketches for all the "major" characters.
